Noblesse Oblige – Affair Of The Heart (CD Album – Repo Records)Posted on 26/06/13
Content: I’ve been never a real fan of Noblesse Oblige. It’s not that I don’t like their music, but the French/Caribbean-German duo Valerie Renay - Sebastian Lee Philipp couldn’t ever totally convince me. Their 4th album for sure is an exception to the rule and has totally seduced me by a refined and carrying pop style driven by the sensual vocal parts of Miss Renay.
The opening song “Mata Hari” is a quite evocative title for a brilliant music piece. This is pure sex-electro-pop music inspired by one of the most famous spy in history. There’s a great Eastern flavor on top of the song, which made it irresistible. The next few songs simply confirm the pop elaboration of the debut. The songs are based upon solid and efficient 80s elements and mixed with refreshing electronics plus great vocal parts. It all sounds beautiful and like pure sex. For all of those who heard the “Runaway”-EP preceding this album I can assure you will not be disappointed!
And when you take off the sensuality you simply get beautiful and even sensitive music like “Chasing Shadows”. The 2nd part of the album is a bit quieter and sometimes pretty close to ballads. The female and male vocals are entirely fascinating although I heard a bit more of the earlier Noblesse Oblige-style on these songs. The cover version of the legendary “Hotel California” originally written by The Eagles is not exactly the kind of song I expected. It’s a kind of surprise perfectly emulating the melody of the original song, but with all the minimalism and also experimentalism of Noblesse Oblige. It’s not my favorite cut, but for sure a song revealing the composing skills of Sebastian Lee Philipp.
Conclusion: This new opus is a mix between brilliant and danceable electro-pop songs and quieter tracks. The most poppy side of the album definitely belongs to the best Noblesse Oblige ever has made!
Best songs: “Mata Hari”, “Runaway”, “Burn”.
