00tz 00tz – Alter Eden (CD – Nilaihah Records)Posted on 27/12/12
After their 2nd and great “Frequency Damage”-album 00tz 00tz got a deal with Nilaihah Records. “Alter Eden” is already the 3rd full length of this duo and I was really wondering what the new songs would sound like.
Krysta Veronica Button and Nicky Phoenix are holding on to the main ingredients of “Frequency Damage”, which is mainly focused on dark-cyber electronics of power! The vocals of Miss Button became softer creating a kind of duality with the male growls of Nicky Phoenix. That’s for sure the main evolution in comparison with the previous CD. The point is that Krysta Veronica Button for sure has evolved in her vocal capacities, but it doesn’t always work. “Star” is a real anti-climax and maybe a good reason to get back to the harder Erica Duncan-style.
Musically, “Alter Eden” reveals a lot of cool songs. “Living Hell” is a solid opener and a potential club-killer. “Cycle” sounds in a similar vein, with a Suicide Commando-touch on top. “Break Free” is driven by solid sound blasts and carrying ‘oontz’ vibes. “Bleeder” is made of the same ingredients and for so far I really was sure that “Alter Eden” would become a huge hit.
The 2nd part of the album is more stagnating and that’s a pity. The songs are sometimes a bit too linear-like although “Defeat” with its technoid elements and the heavy “VLHC” both are noticeable cuts. Sonik Foundry made a great remix of “Living Hell” and that’s for sure another track to watch out for.
“Alter Eden” mixes some real great cuts with a few lesser songs. I maybe expected too much of this new album and especially after the great “Frequency Damage”. Don’t get me wrong, the new work shows real cool cuts, but didn’t impress as much as on “Frequency Damage”.
