!Distain – 20th Anniversary (DVD – Echozone)Posted on 16/12/12
The German synth-pop band !Distain is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The idea to release a DVD for this very special event is totally appropriated. The DVD is a kind of retrospective and looking back to some of the band’s greatest hits ever. Next to this kind of ‘best of’ recorded end of 2011 in Köln (Germany) we next get a chapter with 8 promo videos and last, but not least, the final chapter with even more extras.
This release is first of all meant to please the huge fanbase of this leading synth-pop formation. I can say without any hesitation that !Distain together with De/Vision belong to the leading formations of the German synth-pop scene. The band has gained their recognition by well-crafted pop tunes, alluring vocals and choruses that you sometimes can sing together with the band. De/Vision is more focused on moody atmospheres while !Distain sounds more like a happy synth-pop formation. The concert in Köln features 14 songs that get us back to the early years of the band, but also includes more recent work as well.
The absolute hits of the past few years “Mandragore” and “Monokultur” both are essential cuts of the gig, but other songs like “Conversation Overkill” and “Tears Of Joy” bring us back in time. So this concert is a fine selection of songs that the !Distain fans know and cherish. And you can see the communion between the band and their audience. !Distain performs in a very professional way. You can see this band is used to performing in front of sold-out venues. The music and vocals together create a heavenly harmony every synth-pop lover will simply adore. The only minus point about this gig is the image. There’s nothing really wrong with the image properly speaking except for the scarf each member is wearing during the gig. It looks a bit like they re grandfathers who are afraid of getting a cold.
Globally speaking this concert is a great moment of entertainment and simply confirms the status of this leading pop band.
The “Promo Videos” chapter is featuring 8 clips and here again we get a nice match between earlier songs and recent hits. It’s quite funny to see the trio back on “Whispering Love”, “Conversation Overkill” or yet “Tears Of Joy”. A clip I really like is “Mandragore” for the kind of 3D effects. I also enjoyed the clip of “Why (Bootlicking Hypocrites)”.
Last, but not least we get some ‘Extras’ featuring a gallery with pictures, the band in their studio and the ‘making of’ of “Mein Weg”.
This DVD features the right content to please the !Distain fans and will be for sure a nice gift to put under the Christmas tree.
