The Mission – 25th Anniversary Celebration / Silver (Double DVD + CD – Echozone)Posted on 16/12/12
The Mission officially started back in 1986 with the 12” “1” featuring the famous hit “Serpents Kiss” and called it quit in 2008. Wayne Hussey did some solo-work before releasing previously unreleased songs on the album “Dum Dum Bullet”. He next had the idea to reform the original The Mission to celebrate the 25th anniversary in 2011. Together with Craig Adams and Simon Hinkler, but without Mick Brown the band prepared their comeback for a live performance at the London, Brixton Academy. Mike Kelly replaced Mick Brown and The Mission climbed back on stage for an unforgettable show.
That’s the show you can watch on the 1st DVD. Except an impressive number of hits like “Serpents Kiss”, Neil Young’s famous cover version of “Like A Hurricane”, “Severina, “Wasteland”, “Tower Of Strength”, “Butterfly On A Wheel”, “Deliverance”, “Hands Across The Ocean”, “Like A Child Again” and much more. This DVD features 15 hits, but especially shows an amazing communion of The Mission and especially its front man with the audience. You can feel the enthusiasm of Hussey entertaining his fans, making a little joke about The Sisters Of Mercy and showing he’s still a great and alluring leader.
The ‘bonus’ of this DVD features an interesting chapter of interviews with the fans. It all looks like they were coming from all over the globe to see this reunion of their favorite band. There also is a kind of ‘behind the scenes’ of this concert and images of rehearsal footage for the 2011 tour.
The 2nd DVD features the concert in Köln (Germany) and a few songs of the concert in Frankfurt. The show and tracklist aren’t that different except we get a few more songs here. Among the ‘extra’ songs we get –can I call it a cover version (?) of “1969”. The main difference with the London show is the enthusiasm. You can feel that The Mission was playing in their homeland and it also was the 1st gig so imagine the atmosphere. The German shows also look a little less dynamic and featuring a more introverted Wayne Hussey on stage.
Last, but not least you also get a CD featuring 15 songs of the gig in Köln. This is a good idea if you want to hear the CD for example in your car.
Notice by the way that “Silver” is also available as Blu Ray. This DVD was released one year after the celebration, but it was worthy to wait. It’s a great production and an excellent idea for a Christmas gift. The Mission still rules!
