Linea Aspera – Linea Aspera (CD – Dark Entries Records/Genetic Records)Posted on 02/12/12
This new English duo consisting of Ryan Ambridge (synths/programming) and Alison Lewis (vocals/synths) is a great new project on Dark Entries Records. The American label mainly releases old and forgotten 80s releases, but Linea Aspera is one of the few exceptions to the rule and the least I can say is that this duo sounds great! The name of the band is probably inspired by anatomy and chosen for its consonance. The album has been released in the US by Dark Entries Records on vinyl format and in Germany by Genetic Records on CD format.
From start to finish, you will directly recognize the strong 80s influence of electro-pop and new-wave music. Linea Aspera composes their songs with pure vintage gear. The analogue sounds have this magic retro feeling of cold electronics and typical melodic leads. Alison Lewis’ way of singing is quite 80s like as well. She sings in a rather sterile and “less emotional” way, which was a main characteristic of the 80s.
Every new song is filled with nostalgia reminding me of the good-old and early days of electronic music. “Linea Aspera” only features 8 songs and that’s a pity as this is the kind of release we don’t really want to reach the end. There’s not a single song to throw away, but as the absolute masterpieces I’ll mention “Preservation Bias” and “Lamanai”.
Linea Aspera sounds simple, but efficient. This is an alluring emulation of the 80s synth-pop school and the less I can say is that this band is a real nice newcomer on the scene.
