Sinsect – A Broken Hero (CD – Noisenbassen Records)Posted on 16/11/12
James Ashley started his musical activities as a DJ in New York. He progressively started to compose his own music leading him to set up Sinsect. After a few self-released productions he finally launched the official debut-CD “Bug Life” on Crunch Pod. The label stopped his activities, but Sinsect went on striking back with a new CD and joining the brand-new label Noisenbassen Records.
Sinsect previously self-released 3 EP’s entitled “Broken Heroes” (Volume 1, -2 & -3). A few songs from the EP’s were picked up, but this album still features a lot of new material. Sinsect merges harsh electronic sounds with brutal, linear rhythms and a few technoid tones. Some of the work reminds me of the intelligence of Haujobb and Architect. There for sure is an IDM touch running through the work. The production reveals impressive sound manipulations. The majority of the tracks are quite hard and powerful, but Sinsect also deals with slower cuts. The common point between all the tracks is the dark exposure of the sounds and atmospheres. “A Broken Hero” is not exactly what I would call a stereotypical album rather than a work trying to create some distance with the established and recognized standards.
That’s precisely what I like about “Broken Heroes”, which is an amazing piece of raw technoid intelligence mixed with heavy rhythms. The more experimental-like “Losing Focus” more sounds like a kind of intermezzo, but still is a noticeable cut dominated by a kind of sonar sound. The best cuts are yet to come. First there’s “The Lownly”, which is into pure sound intelligence. “Divergent” is another impressive piece run by a heavy dark sound blast and resonating beats. The project claims to be influenced by power-noise and that’s what comes through on “Sudden Storms”. I also like the cool electro sequences running through this song.
In the end, it becomes clear that Sinsect achieved a diversified album based upon sound creativity and an efficient writing.
