The Razor Skyline - Dark Water Oasis (CD - C.O.P. International)Posted on 31/10/12
"Dark Water Oasis" is the resurrection of The Razor Skyline. This 4th full length has been released after a hibernation of 9 years. After singer Karen Kardell left the band a few months after the 3rd album (2003) the name of this successful project progressively got lost in oblivion. The band however now strikes back with a new female singer and the input of 2 extra members. Miska Kazda appears to be a judicious choice to replace Karen Kardell, but the music also evolved towards new influences.
The new songs still sound pretty new-wave minded, but the particularity of the songs consists of the use of tribal percussion. Don't expect a kind of Monica Richards, but simply a new-wave band merging different influences with each other. The debut songs will reassure the old fans of the band. This band still has a huge potential, "Sahara" being the ultimate illustration of their talent. We here are in front of the perfect gothic song featuring a great vocalist, cool guitar parts and an efficient tribal rhythmic. Other cuts like "Vittoria", "We The People" and "View Of Paradise" are similar tracks and divine experiences. Now and then we also perceive a kind of Eastern touch giving some extra spice to the songs.
After an astonishing debut, the songs are progressively moving into a few quieter (cf. "Grey Skies") and even wave-pop (cf. "Dark Water") pieces. The most significant and even outstanding song is a cover version of The Eurythmics' "The City Never Sleeps". This song is not gothic at all, but a poignant and sensual cover of one of the most legendary songs of The Eurythmics.
The Razor Skyline is back with a new line-up and a different sound. It's up now to the listeners to make up their mind, but "Dark Water Oasis" has the potential to put the band back on the international map of gothic music.
