Lestat – Arisen (CD – Nilaihah Records)Posted on 02/07/12
This is a quite surprising signing on Nilaihah Records. To be honest with you, I’d never heard of Lestat before. The band was mainly active during the 90s and has been reformed after years of hibernation. The last album was released in 1994 so just imagine the gap with “Arisen”.
The new album starts with an apocalyptic dark atmosphere composed with guitar and electronics. On top of it all are emerging spooky male vocals and female backing vocals. “Awake And Watching” coming next is much more representative for Lestat’s sound. There’s a clear and recognizable 80s touch reminding me of cold-wave music. The vocals are much clearer now and quite captivating. The dark sphere appears to be a guiding line the entire album long. The song is a cover version of Click Click. The title song perfectly stands for this gloomy atmosphere, which becomes a tiny mysterious as well.
With regard to production, I highly recommend the song “Long Since Forgotten”, which features this typical old vinyl cracking. It’s a beautiful song, which remains rather quiet and a bit evasive. There are French spoken female vocals merged with English male vocals here. The global mood becomes darker and very melancholic on “Red Light (Revisited)”. The original version was released 22 years ago. In a more apocalyptic style again “Sent From Hell” sounds heavier again, which is also due to the kind of commanding vocals.
Nilaihah Records often releases dark-electro and synth-pop productions as well, but Lestat injects a kind of new angle. It’s not my favorite release on the label, but “Arisen” will for sure find their audience.
