Flux – Motivational Chants (CD – Electric Fantastic Sound)

More or less 3 years after the CD “Safe + Sound” Flux is finally back launching their 2nd opus to date. This band set up by ex Neuroactive-members Vesa Rainne and Ville Brusi explores new grounds of synth-pop.
Actually I can’t say their music sounds innovative, but Flux reveals certain maturity, which has been reflected in a few alluring songs. The opening part is absolutely fascinating. “Claws And Teeth”, which has been previously released as digital single, sounds like a great merge of EBM (especially for the bass line) and mega electro-pop music. Female vocalist Salla reminds me sometimes of the timbre of voice the legendary Propaganda vocalist. “Defences” coming up next moves closer to EBM, reminding me a bit of Restricted Area. The body-pop mixture is very efficient and Salla’s vocals are once again perfect.
We next get a few quieter pieces, which are more into typical electro-pop fields. “Late Hours” moves back to a kicking bass line joined by a danceable tempo and a carrying lead. Flux is clearly based upon solid synth-pop structures constructed with kicking sounds and Salla’s alluring timbre of voice. The songs for sure evoke good old 80s souvenirs, but they’ve been mixed with a fresh and modern touch.
The 2nd part of the album has no real new highlights. The songs get calmer and “I Come In Peace” even sounds like a pop-ballad. There’s nothing wrong with a more emotional side, but I have to say that their heavier pieces are much more alluring. There’s just one more song I want to mention. I’m referring to the more astral inspired “Life Is Full Of Surprises”, which is carried by a dance/house-like tune.
“Motivational Chants” sounds in the continuum of their debut CD. The new work shows a mix of harder and softer pop pieces. Flux has found its place on the wide map of synth-pop bands. The band is always a guarantee for some exciting moments of music.
