Sopor Aeternus – A Strange Thing To Say (EP – Apocalyptic Vision Records GmbH/Trisol)Posted on 24/12/10
The fabulous Anna-Varney Cantodea is back with a new magnificent EP. Sopor Aeternus remains for sure one of the most mystic, deadly, intriguing, extravagant and talented projects from the entire gothic scene. But more than simply referring to glorious adjectives, Sopor Aeternus is one of the single projects, which moved ahead of traditional gothic music. Anna-Varney has brought Sopor Aeternus to a higher dimension where gothic and neo-classic are coming together in a sublime symbiosis. “A Strange Thing To Say” starts with the title song, which will get you in its grip for more than 9 minutes. Here again the artist will invite you to discover a little corner of the morbid mind animating this project. Sopor Aeternus sounds like being married with Death and the lyrics of this song are just a new illustration from the dark thoughts haunting the life of Anna-Varney. The lyrics are gothic ‘pure sang’ while the music appears once more as a deeply artistic composition written with multiple classical instruments (played by different guest musicians). “A Strange Thing To Say” will rapidly become one of my favorite Sopor Aeternus songs. The structure, arrangements and artistic value are the work of a genius. There’s a kind of ‘pop’ touch running through the song while Anna’s lyrics and vocal performance do the rest. I especially like the violin play on this song. “Polishing Silver” coming next sounds quite similar in style. The writing is full of delicacy, which all results in a fragile and emotive song. “The Urine Song” sounds quite provocative for its title while musically I here again am impressed by the violin. And the violin gets me already in its grip on “Stains Of You”. We’re here like entering a more dreamy exposure of Sopor Aeternus . We finally get “20.000 Leagues Under The Sea” and a revisited story of Jules Verne masterpiece plus a bonus track, which brings this typical music box impression. The DVD features the artistic video clip of the title song. This is an opportunity to get a bit more into the world of this gothic artist inspired by the ‘eternal sleep’. Anna-Varney confirms to be extremely meticulous in all that she does. The clip features a real story board with Anna as the Goddess of night and despair. Sopor Aeternus once more is confirmed to be a ‘total project’ where each little element has been brilliantly achieved! This EP has been released in a deeply artistic digipak featuring an impressive booklet with the lyrics and pictures.
