Andy Laplegua invites us to dive back into the past and the early years of his brainchild. "Noise Collection Vol.1" is a kind of re-release of the early work of Combichrist. The fist disc brings us back to his debut album "The Joy Of Gunz". The debut was rather hesitating and we all know that the real break through happened with the release of the 2nd album "Everybody Hates You". "The Joy Of Gunz" was more inspired by rougher electro-industrial music. This album features fewer vocals. Musical wise it now appears that it was a kind of experiment or just a try-out. It's however interesting to get back to this album to seize some of the musical ideas and sounds, which became a kind of basis for the later work. Combichrist wasn't into pure industrial, but industrial and electronics have been merged together. Andy Laplegua surprises with refreshing sounds like shown on "Play Dead" and "Turmoil" while a more technoid influence appears on the excellent "History Of Madness". Another interesting cut is "Master Control" for its heavier industrial side. "The Joy Of Gunz" didn't enter into history like the next albums of Combichrist, but it definitely was an interesting debut. The 2nd disc brings us back to the first EP's of Combichrist entitled "Kiss The Blade" and "Sex, Drogen Und Industrial". We also get 2 tracks from the 12" vinyl "Blut Royale" and exclusive tracks featured on the compilation "Industrial for The Masses Vol.2". We here get Combichrist with a few more vocals and musical wise a sound evolving towards the familiar power-dark-electro-techno style. Songs like "The Well" and "Penal Ty Shot" reveals a sounds into progression while "Blut Royale" ("Instru-Mental Version") was for sure one of the absolute first hits from the project. Some of you might remember the song "Tractor", which was a cool and minimal piece of electronics with funny lyrics on top. The different versions from "Sex, Drogen Und Industri" (including a remix by Soman) reveal Combichrist taking some distance with the brute and instrumental work from the debut. The 2nd disc shows a noticeable evolution in sound, which finally leaded Combichrist to his status of leading band from the scene.
This album is a nice item for all those who missed the debut releases of Combichrist!
