It must have been the first time that De/Vision took such a long break in between two releases. Nearly 3 years after the “Noob”-album they finally came back. In the meantime this German flag holder of synth-pop set up their own label Popgefahr Records. Musical wise fewer elements really changed. While synth-pop doesn’t have a same popularity as a couple of years ago now, this duo simply holds on the good old receipt to create highly qualitative music. The opening song “Mandroids” sounds like the perfect illustration to claim that synth-pop - and De/Vision as well – are alive and kicking. Some Depeche Mode influences are noticeable, but it’s first of all a great De/Vision song leaded by a cool, carrying tune and efficient bleeps. The pure and sweet, but charismatic vocals of Steffen are nicely joining in and remind us of the talent of the band’s singer. The debut song is definitely my favorite one, but the “Album Version” of “Rage” coming next is already a hot shot! This song is the title track of the 1st maxi preceding this album. I here like the rougher sounds that have been used by Thomas. It’s definitely a good choice to animate a maxi. After the quieter and moody “What’s Love All About” comes another essential song entitled “Time To Be Alive”. Why am I not surprised that this song will be featured together with “Rage” on their maxi? This song is simply perfect; devastating pop sounds, great atmosphere and the switch from quieter parts into an empowered danceable style. The next few songs aren’t the most noticeable ones although and once more confirming the composing skills of the band. Songs like “Plastic Heart”, “Be A Light To Yourself” or yet “Ready To Die” are quite traditional songs that will please the fans. They also move into the moodier style of the band. “Twisted Story” is a very last masterpiece that here again sounds like Depeche Mode watching from behind the corner. The bass line of this song is irresistible! “Until The Of Time” closes “Popgefahr” with a rather down tempo piece and wafting vocals. It took me a few listening to really seize the ‘danger’ of this release: great synthpop music confirming and accentuating the leading position and status of this now legendary band.
