The (latest) resurrection of Vomito Negro finally resulted in a new album. The history of this Belgian band became quite confusing. Gin Devo and Guy Van Mieghem were a quite successful and praised duo in the late 80s and early 90s. Back in time Vomito Negro definitely belonged to the top of the dark electro scene. A car crash causing serious injuries to front- and showman Guy Van Mieghem took the band into a long hibernation. More or less 10 years after their last album (cf. “Wake Up”) the duo finally came back to life releasing the “Fireball”-album in 2002 (on the now gone Triton). The live performances were still powerful and convincing, but let’s face the truth “Fireball” was without a shadow of a doubt their weakest album thus far… and the least successful as well. In between “Fireball” and “Skull & Bones” the duo came to a split. Guy Van Mieghem went on with Vomito Negro introducing Geert de Wilde (IC 434) as a new member (strange it’s not mentioned on their site). After some successful live performances G. Van Mieghem seemed to have stopped all activities and Vomito Negro went down again. In the meantime Gin Devo was active in a project called Pressure Control. The “Vamp” album released in 2004 showed some interesting ideas, but commercial wise it was a big flop. After Manie Gance (the other member) passed away Peter Mastbooms (known as Borg) joined in. After a few more performances the duo put Pressure Control in stand-by and recovered the name Vomito Negro from dust! And here they are launching “Skull & Bones” released by Out Of Line. The 1st disc reveals new songs, which musical wise and especially according to the dark atmospheres remain quite faithful to the original sound of the band. It’s really positive to hear a dark electronic band taking some distance with the established standards from a style where too much bands are sounding the same. But the album also has his contras. I’m missing the vocals of Guy Van Mieghem who has been always the lead singer and charismatic frontman of the band (while Gin just sung on a few songs). He was like the soul of the band and that’s an essential element I’m missing here! Gin Devo is singing an acceptable, spooky way adding a nice studio effect on his vocals, but he can never emulate the enraged fury of Guy Van Mieghem. I’m missing conviction and a bit more passion in the vocals. “Skull & Bones” is however not a bad album. The songs were composed with a fresh touch and even explores a few technoid elements. Some repetitive loops are sometimes a bit over the top, but perfectly matching on songs like “Burning Man”, “Mongoloid” and “United Fake” (the last song driven by a cool EBM bass line). We can’t really consider the new songs as dancefloor killers, but just an alternative to the growing army of ‘oontz’ projects and stereotypical dark electro bands. The 2nd disc (limited edition) features 10 old songs (like “Feel The Heat”, “Stay Alive”, “Baby Needs Crack”, “Shock”, “Black Power”, “No Hope No Fear”, “Move Your Body”, “Save The World”) from the original duo that has been transposed into a modern approach. The band seriously reworked the old songs injecting refreshing bleeps and reworking the global arrangements. It’s an interesting experience although I personally prefer the more brutal and original versions. “Feel The Heat” opening this 2nd disc is the most attractive track from the list. We can’t deny that the best years of Vomito Negro are far behind, but “Skull & Bones” seems to have the potential to appeal for a few and unconditional lovers of their early years! I’m sure they’ll appreciate the album.
