Flint Glass – Nyarlathotep + From Beyond (CD + EP Funkwelten)

Those who are familiar with the discography of Flint Glass will for sure remember the original “Nyarlathotep”-album released in 2006 on Funkwelten and Brule Records (the label of mastermind Gwenn Trémorin). I think we might consider this album as a historic piece in Flint Glass’ career. The re-release of the album just confirms the huge potential and intelligence in sound emerging from this French artist. “Nyarlathotep” was inspired by novels of H.P. Lovecraft and the least I can say is that the music sometimes sounds even more fantastic than the novels. Flint Glass conceived a mix of ambient, electronics and trance giving birth to an elaborate and poignant composition. Icy electronic parts and sophisticated rhythms ending in trance will drive the listener into total adoration. “Nyarlathotep” is comparable to a great French wine, it only becomes better and stronger after years! Re-discovering this album was a real fascinating experience. “Nephren Ka” remains a terrific piece. The dark elements and trance structures might remind a little bit to This Morn’Omina, but Flint Glass is just another band and another experience. “Nyarlathotep” moves on very different grounds also walking on dark ambient paths. The “Brain Speeking Machine”-track is a good illustration of this diversity. This piece opens in a pure Cold Meat Industry style, being quite dark and ritual like while later on a rhythmic joins in transposing the song into a different sound approach. A few bombastic outbursts like “Alhazred” and “Angular Space” are accentuating the power of Flint Glass. “Nyarlathotep” sounds like a progressive industrial production. We also get the remixes from the original album made by Ah Cama-Sotz, Disharmony, Xabec and This Morn’Omina together with Empusae. I especially like the remix of “Brain death” by Ah Cama-Sotz, which sounds like the ultimate match between trance and ambient. Displacer did a remarkable job as well, remixing “Germ Code” in a fascinating way. This re-release is a must have for those who don’t have the album yet while others will be pleased by the EP “From Beyond”. This EP is a separate release delivering seven pieces of music. The style reminds close to the album, but sounds even more into modernism. The opening cut “Al Takwi” is driven by a kind of industrial triphop rhythmic while Eastern influences and distorted sounds are giving a particular mystic touch to the song. I also like the progression featured on “Hypnos” where tribal, ambient and industrial elements have been stick together. I also like the global production of the “Al Azif”-piece while the very last song entitled “The Hound” explodes in a pure trance climax. Once again we here find elements of trance, ambient and industrial coming together in one layer. A very last note about the release(s) concerns the artwork reminding to some albums of Frontline Assembly.
