Android Lust – Resolution – Collector’s Edition (3CD Box Synthellec Music)

Android Lust should be proud of this ‘collector’s edition’. The fans will get three albums, a poster, a t-shirt, a pewter pin, a sticker and some pictures. This is a real nice gift to put under the Christmas tree while it’s also an opportunity to get back to the early years of this band set up by Shikhee. We’re getting back to the two first albums originally released in the late 90s on the now gone Tinman Records. I perfectly remember the “Resolution”-album, which revealed a very unique style of electronic music. This album had been characterized by multiple influences moving from dark electronics to atmospheric electronics to a kind of raw-pop style. Shikhee was born in Bangladesh, went to school in the UK to finally move to the USA. It’s not that clear from where she gets all her influences, but this musician definitely tries to explore new grounds. “Resolution” sounds quite 90s in sound (just pay some attention for the percussion sounds), but avoids some typical standards used in time. So she experiments quite a lot with her vocals. The production of her voice is pretty cool while adding a spooky touch. I also enjoy some bleeps and textures like revealed on the “Cruelty” and “Suffer The Flesh” songs. The “Refuse” song is quite refined in writing and the use of sounds showing a real potential for this artist (on this debut album). The 2nd album entitled “Evolution” was an album featuring several remixes from the “Resolution” album plus a few new songs as well. This re-release is also an opportunity to (re)discover some other bands that were signed to Tinman Records. I’m here referring to I, Parasite, Cydonia and Crocodile Shop. The most famous project on this album is probably Gridlock realizing a noticeable remix of “Cherrished Agony”. My personal favourite remix is the one made by Occult Technologies of “Suffer The Flesh”. This is a hard electronic piece with cool acid bleeps. I also enjoyed the Cydonia remix of “Cruelty” and the spookier (original version of) “Suffer The Flesh (Friction)”. Crocodile Shop did a good job as well on “Downer”, which is more into heavy (break)beats. The last album is definitely the most interesting one. “Rarities, Demos & B-Sides” clearly indicates what this album is all about. This is not exactly the kind of album that will leave you breathless, but it brings a wider vision of the band. So I enjoyed the “Where Angels Lie (Writhing)”-track, which is a remix released in 1999 on the “Awake The Machines II”-compilation (released on Out Of Line). Another remarkable piece is the “Sympathy Mix” of “Sin” by I, Parasite. When going back to the early years of Android Lust the “Down”-song released on the demo-cassette “Foreign Body” in 1997 illustrated the potential of the band. And another ‘old’ demo song called “Spine” is also a nice discovery with some guitar input on top. I didn’t really discover hidden pearls here, but a kind of documentary that will for sure please to the fans of this project. This is an excellent initiative!
