“Prey On You” marks the first material since this Chicago quartet’s label debut, “Optics”. Produced by the Sebastian Komor, it finds the band honing their electronic influences while augmenting the aggression in their guitars as well. Perhaps Komor’s influence weighs in the most on “Prey On You”, a track where guitars are surprisingly absent, allowing a cardboard percussive hop, a watery synth murmur, and Brittany Bindrim’s zippering lilt to coalesce into a plucky piece of electro pop. In contrast, even with Bindrim’s impassioned cries, the machine-gun snares and brutal barking guitars in “Ammunition” seem steadfast on making it their most metal moment to date. Finally, there’s “Hollowed’, whose lock-step guitar and drum bounce-to-dirge groove feels like a stylistic nod to Marilyn Manson’s “Beautiful People”, though Bindrim’s velvety croon certainly keeps such comparisons partially at bay. Remix-wise, the disc sports quite a diverse selection of talent. Komor’s mix of the title track adds his usual oomph to its once-subtle trance elements, while C/A/T transforms “Ammunition” into a bristled trip-hop beast. However, the biggest wonder here is an appearance by Chicago’s legendary Die Warzau, whose metallic fuzzy textures and deep bass thrum distill a unique cabaret motif from “Hollowed”. Offering some of their catchiest hooks to boot, Prey only adds welcome breadth to I:Scintilla’s already dynamic crossover sound.
