"Breaking Apart" is a very bipolar album for VAC, with its content bisected between the shoe-gazing ennui studied throughout 2006's "Lust For Blood", and the movie sampling, sci-fi horror EBM romps that peppered his earlier releases. Loaded with samples from "Se7en", "Phucked Up Phreak" is like a mutant descendant to his 1998 "Calling Ov The Dead"-era "Phucking Phreak", though its eerie spidering synths and crawling percussion bear even more menace thanks to the inclusion stuttering electric guitar. With bubbling arpeggios and seductive sing-song refrain, the sinister groove of "Caustic Disco" is like a blast from his goa-steeped past, while the electric synth crackle and propulsive clicking beat of the sci-fi tinged "Tripped Out" also won't disappoint those craving a new VAC dance single. However, most will likely be awestruck by the abundant presence of acoustic guitar on this disc, with "Black Rainbows" specifically proving it to be a rather successful departure in their sound. Trapped a miasma that's half Tear Garden, half the Cure, Erickson's weary croon is paired with its raw emotional jangle, while a clockwork drum beat and a wistful synth outro linger as if reminding this skeptical it's still VAC. Though Erickson's cited these influences in the past, the influence is certainly felt here, resulting in the most solid VAC release since "Drugs", and proof-positive that sometimes taking a stylistic risk can pay off in spades.
