This new album from the American act is without any doubt a stand out piece of work from their whole discography. We're miles away from their intimate and atmospheric debut though there are some remaining fragments of that era here and there. Sam Rosenthal probably ingested a lot of influences, sounds and ideas from the various bands of his Projekt-label so that he manages here to totally redefine his sound and grow from a shy and introverted musical project towards a totally matured and even provocative act. "10 Neurotics" is confirming the orientation announced with the two previous releases but here the recipe and cohesion are far better. Strangely they've never been that many guests (whether on vocals or music) as on this new release. The brilliant Athan Maroulis (Spahn Ranch) lend his crooner type of vocals to several tracks including "The Pleasure In The Pain" or the opener "Sailor Boy" (we're not far from a rough Tom Waits on this one). Other artists featured are the innovative Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls) who provides most of the drums as well as Laurie Reade (vocalist with Attrition) or Nicki Jane (and her very, very particular voice on the cabaret-like "Rotten Zurich Café"). Also noticeable is Lucas Lanthier (Cinema Strange) who gives a post-punk touch on "Curious Yet Ashamed". A very rich and beautiful album that will please all their fans but also open them some more doors...
