I guess several gothic fans discovered this Swedish band during one of their numerous gigs all over Europe. The Exploding Boy is a new name for me, but be sure it's a band I'll keep in mind. I became directly addicted to their 2nd full length "Afterglow". The Exploding Boy reminds me of some famous 80s new-wave bands like The Cure (for the more melancholic parts) and Big Country (for the impressive guitar play). Big Country was a Scot band with a particular carrying and quite melodious guitar play. Several song on "Afterglow" are like evoking this typical style and it's been quite a long time ago since I have enjoyed that much the guitar playing from a band. Songs like "40 Days" (previously released as Mcd), but especially "Heart Of Glass", "Desperados" and "Let The Right One In" are brilliant songs. There's a touch of Placebo as well running through the songs. It makes the particularity of this band, which isn't typically dark and new-wave minded, but also opens a window on a wider and more accessible style. The some more nasal sounding vocals are quite Placebo-like and I guess the band will not blame me for this link. "Afterglow" features several masterpieces next to some enjoyable cuts. This is also an opportunity to get back another familiar track entitled "London" (being the title song of the 2nd Mcd preceding the full length). In the end I would say that The Exploding Boy stands for an indie-wave-rock style that will appeal for many new fans! This album is absolutely great and has a bright future!
