Oniric - Cabaret Syndrome (CD Caustic Records)

After several EPs Oniric now signed to the Spanish label Caustic Records to release their debut full length. Set up in Italy by Carlo De Fillipo and GianVigo the duo composes with "Cabaret Syndrome" a very intimate release. I'm not affirming that 'cabaret' music is quite trendy today, but we've to admit more and more productions in the genre have been released the past few months. There's nothing wrong with that as it brings some diversity. This album sounds in a quite 'happy feeling' mood with songs (cf. "Once Upon The Time In The Cabaret" and "Blessing") reminding me of music we're used to hear on old fairy grounds. The lyrics seem like telling us little stories and I especially like the male - female vocals duo on "Blessing" (featuring Simona Giusti as guest vocalist). When analyzing the lyrical content it all starts to get a bit weird as the lyrical content isn't always that 'happy'-like. It's all about lost and sadness. "Un Gris Bord" coming up were sung in French. There's no problem with that except that there are several mistakes in the vocabulary. But that's something you can't really hear during the song. "L'Autre" is another sung with French lyrics and once again it's clear that this is not their Mother tongue. Nevertheless the song is really well crafted reminding me a bit of the famous Mekano. The piano parts of this song are absolutely great. A last song I want to mention is "Last Temptation Rescue" for the harmony between the sweet female vocal parts and the acoustic guitar. Several acoustic instruments (like violin, guitar, percussion ao) have been used in the composition. It creates this dark cosey mood that runs through the album. Oniric brings a very personal interpretation of cabaret music, but it's an enjoyable experience. Caustic Records is also a very particular label for releasing very diversified artists (moving from dark electronics to gothic to cabaret), which makes this label for sure being one of the most open-minded from the entire scene!
