One year after the promising debut-cd "Bone Music" now appears a kind of 'bonus' release featuring 11 remixes plus a few new songs as well. I guess the great debut of Canadian musician Jairus Khan has probably incited Tympanik to release this album, but I'm not sure it was quite necessary to release it after one single album. Anyway, "A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky" is quite enjoyable delivering some great bands in the remix like ESA, Iszoloscope, Stendeck, Autoclav1.1 ao. Let's start with the 'new' part of the album featuring 3 new songs. These songs aren't exactly what I would call the best part of this album for showing a different side of the project that didn't appear on "Bone Music". The songs are more soundtrack-like and wouldn't have find their place on the debut album. They here are more like little intermezzo's in between the remixes. So let's concentrate on the remixes. Cyanotic opening the album brings a furious remix of "Ancients". ESA coming next took "Waiting For Gira", which is a well-crafted remix featuring some dance vibes and a kind of ritual, mystical chants. The next attention grabber is the "Oil Sands Remix" by Monoculture of "Friends Of Father". This remix reveals a heavy rhythmic while I especially like the crescendo way this version has been built up. Another cool remix is the one made by Salt. The "Passed Away Remix" of "Just" sounds like a nice twist between dark electro tones and ambient atmospheres. The absolute climax has been reached on another remix of "just". I'm talking about the "Boo! Remix" made by Synkro. This version also reveals dark electro layers and intriguing atmospheres while leaded by a danceable beat! Last, but not least the very last song of the album is a mix Ad·ver·sary and Dirtybunny made together from a Cyanotic song entitled "Deface". It sounds like another band (which is partly true) and definitely into another style. This is a kind of dark electro beating track empowered with guitar riffs and distorted vocals. It brings a rather unexpected end to this album!
"A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky" is a pleasant release, but never reaches the high level of "Bone Music"!
