Early 2008 David Thrussell had been commissioned by DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a funding body of the U.S Government and the Pentagon) to produce a recording that reflects the ideals and reality of Vision 2020, a futuristic military strategy program that first saw the light of day in May of 2000. The idea and concept sounds totally surreal, but "Full Spectrum Dominance" is now a fact. Released on Ant-zen in Europe the album has been now launched by Tympanik Audio for the North American market. Black Lung mixed field recordings and hardware sounds to achieve this particular concept. The album contains a very enlightening explanation about the concept and all the tracks separately. It would take us too long entering into details of all the songs, but musical wise "Full Spectrum Dominance" is an album moving in between typical Black Lung compositions and more explicit soundtrack parts. Thrussell himself defined the album as being unique, crunchy and downbeat sound. It is for sure unique! Crunchy sounds cool as description, but not that evident to understand while the downbeat sound became a kind of trademark of the project. Black Lung again explores multiple influences and paths, but once more reaching a minimal technoid-industrial patchwork. Some tracks can move on the edge of pure experimental music, but at the point when you think that it starts to become pure experimental Black Lung strikes back with cool, danceable low tempo rhythms. The sound constellations are once again unique in their genre like once more confirming the genius complexity of this musician. I sometimes get the impression that he's living on another planet. David Thrussell composes without compromises, just focalising for his 'concept'. He sees himself as a musical journalist, which is rather interesting if we remember his earlier musical exposure concerning politics and military questions. "Full Spectrum Dominance" gives a free ride to the composer's ideas reaching some peaks on cuts like "The Hostmen Of Tyne", "The Territorial Imperative" and "The Regulator Plot". The last part of this album moves progressively into soundtrack compositions. We now can hear a patchwork of sounds and I guess we here get most of the field recordings transposed into music. This part stands for the experimental side, but brings some diversity in the tracklist. It took more or less 1 year to Thrussell to realize and achieve this concept! The album will probably enter into history as one of the most unexpected releases from this Australian sonic alchemist.
