This is already the 6th full length for this Canadian project operating from Toronto and the 2nd album on Tympanik Audio. The album became a kind of collaboration between Displacer and other artists like Daniel Myer, Keef Baker, Broken Fabiola, Lucidstatic or yet Victoria Lloyd (Claire Voyant, HMB) as guest vocalist. A few more artists have also been involved. The collaboration mainly consists out of remixes (a total amount of 7 remixes) and a few featurings. In a way we can see this album as less personal, which probably explains a 'different' style. I'm not affirming Displacer has been totally transposed, but it clearly sounds a bit different from what we've been used to hear from this artist. The tracks remain however quite electro-ambient like and driven by some kind of d'n'b rhythmic. "Junkie Blvd" featuring V. Lloyd on vocals is a very good illustration of this evolution in sound. I really like the astral sounds running through the song while Victoria sings in a rather lazy, sexy way. "Never Compromise" is another new and fascinating piece where Displacer shows a great sound research moving to the edge of dub. The dubby influence is rather vague, but brings a nice addition to the basis of the music. Another new song featuring Victoria Lloyd is "Elbows Bent A Right Angles". I here got the impression to hear Kosheen in a dark and more experimental way. It's definitely one of the less typical songs from Displacer ever, but a damn good one! Broken Fabiola appears on another version of this song and I here especially enjoyed the crystal-like bleeps. Among the remixes I am particularly impressed by the "Resonant Dub Remix by Mark Thibideau (who you maybe know from projects like Repair and Crave). He brought the rhythmic parts into a more straightforward format while the atmospheric side totally fits. Another cool remix is the last one on the album. Marching Dynamics here did a real great job on "Windmill". This remix is more fascinating than the original version and let appear a kind of astral music. You feel like touching the stars while spoken samplings and piano keys are adding an extra relaxing feeling. I personally expected much more out of remixes executed by artists like Daniel Myer and Keef Baker. The remixes aren't bad at all, but they don't really give a surplus to the album. A quite atmospheric release, but not my favourite displacer album for so far!
