Dupont - Entering The Ice Age (cd Progress Productions)

We notice a huge lapse of time in between all the Dupont albums. "Ukraina" being the first full length was released in 2001, we next had to wait 3 years to get the excellent, but totally different "Intermezzo"-cd. The band moved from a typical old-school EBM style towards a mixture of EBM and synth-pop. More than 4 years later Dupont again resuscitates launching "Entering The Ice Age". The duo Riccardo (vox) - Danucci (composition) doesn't move into a new direction, but has composed a new EBM-pop opus. The mixture of typical old-school EBM elements and pop constructions might sound a bit strange, but appears once more to work perfectly. It's quite of a surprise when hearing the dry and pointing EBM bass lines being joined by some catchy pop structures. The vocals of Riccardo remains once more the biggest surprise. The singer has a deep throated way of singing, but there were you would expect a harsh way of singing, he did it quite restfully. Dupont sounds as the union of contradictions and that's what makes them so different compared to the average old-school EBM formation. The main difference with the "Intermezzo"-album is that the new songs are more elaborated in the writing while they also experience with groovy sequences. The opening songs are simply excellent. After "Run For Protection", which is a nice warm-up we get the more groovy and club-sounding "New Dawn". I guess we can here speak about a kind of symbiosis between Pouppée Fabrikk and Pet Shop Boys. It might sound weird and incredible, but it's astonishing! "Entering The Ice Age" coming next appears to be a new great song where body and pop elements are living in the best imaginable harmony. "Behave" is a bit harder while showing remarkable sound treatments. About the production of this album, it's important to mention that Eskil Simonsson (Covenant) did some supervision in the song recording while he also seems to have inspired a few songs for the album. "Your Heart" is a softer song, but clearly evoking a Depeche Mode-influence moving into EBM. Next comes "Like We Never Moved" where Dupont explores some vague technoid ideas and the least I can say is that here again they did with conviction. Among the 2nd part of the album, I noticed the pretty cool and more into pop sounding "N.A.S.A." where the vocals have been produced with a robotic effect on top. A last song I want to mention is "Dope Of Love" where the body-pop style is arranged with a real nice electronic atmosphere. Dupont is a band that again surprises with an original interpretation of EBM, but the least I can say is that they're far more original than the average EBM and/or synth-pop band! "Entering The Ice Age" sounds like a new challenge, but it's one I'll fully support!
