Pandora’s Black Book is a new project set up by the Alaskan composer James Church. That’s a name that might sound familiar, as he’s also the responsible for Lucidstatik (also released on Tympanik Audio). Pandora’s Black Book revealed a total different side from J. Church work. It all sounds a bit like the man is a kind of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lucidstatik is a quite furious and merciless project while Pandora’s Black Book seems like symbolizing the quieter and more ambient side of the man. “Black Brothel” is a rather typical release in the young, but now established Tympanik Audio style. It brings an intelligent and well-crafted mix of high tech electronics and low tempo rhythmic. But that’s not all as the structures become much more complex than this. We get a wide range of astral sweeps and bleeps while other clicks and clangs are adding a little experimental touch to the work. Nothing seems to be impossible for this artist who now refines his work with heavenly string parts (cf. “Black Brothel”) and then dives into cold atmospheric patterns (cf. “Slowburn”) to finally excel in an apotheosis of complexity (cf. “Threshold”). This album is a real experience, which seems to be constantly on the move. “Black Brothel” reveals a sound from unknown paths, in a way that only Tympanik is used to exploring. Pandora’s Black Book is one of these sonic explorers bringing different styles together creating a kind of industrial hybrid!
