“Synthnation” is a documentary with a total during time of 52 minutes exploring several facets of the so-called ‘industrial’-scene. We here totally agree with the words and opinion of Synapscape explaining that there’s a difference between what we here in Europe understand as ‘industrial’ music in contrast to the thoughts in the USA. For Europeans industrial music refers to bands like Throbbing Gristle, SPK, Einsturzende Neubauten and others while for Americans it’s more a global term reassembling electronic underground music. It’s an interesting discussion, which isn’t the main point of this film, but I guess a good introduction to this release. Danny Luci Warlock known as DJ Warlock is the one and only instigator of this documentary. Being a renown master of all trades in Los Angeles he became interested in the ‘hearts’ and ‘minds’ of those so called ‘weirdos dressed in black’. The concept is interesting and especially the input of several bands and musicians from the scene like Jean-Luc and Richard 23 from Front 242, Ronan Harris (VNV Nation), DJ Krishan (Rotersand), Andy La Plegua (Combichrist), Babyland, Inure, Prognosis, Catalog or yet Synapscape. We also get a contribution from Dave Heckman (founder of Metropolis Records) and the French DJ H-Bomb. We here go back to the origins of industrial (or electronic) music and the way some of the artists finally get familiar with it. It’s also an evidence of people (like DJ H-Bomb) telling us how they finally mutate from a ‘normal’ daily job into ‘industrial’ freaks at night. That brings us to industrial lovers sharing with us their interest in industrial music. Different aspects like how they think that other people look at them, their relationship with their parents, the image of industrial freaks, clubbing ao have been reported in this documentary. As mentioned above, it’s more specifically about the American scene, but I guess all electro- & industrial freaks in the world will recognize what it’s all about. We of course get several shots from the dancefloor (Das Bunker) and other live extracts from bands while this documentary also contains several song-snippets (mostly coming from the aforementioned bands). In the end I would ask myself what is industrial music all about? We here at Side-Line are definitely one of the pioneers in reporting information from this underground scene, but all over the years we unconsciously avoid the main question asked in this documentary! Well, I’m not affirming that “Synthnation” will be of a good answer, but the main strength of this documentary is to give us an idea about it all. That could be of a good help for all people considering this scene as ‘weird’ or ‘dangerous’ or whatever they want to call it! I guess the best answer I heard was given by a fan claiming that ‘industrial music is just a way to express yourself! Expression can be very different as well. Musicians often use it to transpose thoughts, feelings and experiences into music. Fans often prefer to express themselves by clothes this way creating the typical image that usually fits to a scene and its culture. This investigation is an excellent initiative!
