Though it may seem like an item geared only for collectors, this compilation of rarities, cover songs, and remixes is a rather excellent sampler of this enigmatic act’s work. Though the grim psychedelic collaborations with Nový Svìt spelunk effectively into the bass guitar drones and ritualistic chants of early CAN, the real meat here is culled from their limited 7” releases. The descending electric organs, saber-rattling horns, and fervent chants of “Yellow Leaf” as well as the militant dirge of acoustic guitar, gentle drums, and bleary accordions of “Vittoriale” shouldn’t be discounted as mere b-sides. Tempered by proud kettledrums, “Time Is Thee Enemy” may dwell on combating old age, but it sounds like a proud Viking dirge welcoming Valhalla. The tribal Wagnerian chants and monastic organs in their cover of Death in June’s “The Odin Hour” are sublimely minimalist, yet it’s the melancholy lilt of an unnamed siren that helps it best the original. At its conclusion, there’s also a trio of remixes for :Wumpscut: and Pacific 231, yet they’re rather tepid compared to the rest. For a band best digested in whole albums, Everything proves that even their odds and ends sometimes outweigh those lump sums.
