Two years after their intriguing debut, “Taste Of Copper”, “Blowback” marks the return of this Canadian act, which has since expanded into a duo. Arriving as two drastically different mixes, "Blowback" is clearly the featured item here. The slightly danceable “Untermenschen” version is wisely presented first; its muffled thump, convoluted humming textures, and rattling percussive tail may be full of musical trepidation, but it pairs well with Mike Heighway's breezy-to-pained anti-war epithets. In contrast, the surprisingly superior “Asunder” mix makes their anti-empirical stance intimate and funky by stressing Heighway’s Trent Renzor-like angst-filled inflections amongst sluggish trip-hop rhythms, fractured clicks, and vibrating bass textures. As for its 'b-sides', “Dressed Dark States” stammers, blips, and pops amongst crystalline hums to offer a moment of IDM leisure, while “Torn”'s soundtrack of flanged machinery, stuttering percussion, and naïve blips seems out to comfort a breathy, and distressed Heighway. Like “Taste Of Copper”, “Blowback”'s four tracks are rife with interesting, experimental ambient arrangements. However, this new Mcd offers a little more bite, thus hinting at an intriguing future.
