Frightdoll is an American female solo-project, which launched the debut-album “Reference Version” in 2007. This girl isn’t only good-looking, she’s also a talented musician. Frightdoll shows an impressive evolution and improvement in sound. It all sounds like she finally has found her own style of music. “Reference Version” sounded more like a kind of working piece and a basis to built up a more elaborated and experienced sound. “Assimilation Illusion” touches different grounds like EBM, electro-pop and even gothic, but sounds really compact. One of the main forces emerging from this album is the carrying and melodious parts. Another remarkable element of the production is the vocals of Frightdoll. She puts some cool effects on her voice, adding a very personal touch to the composition. I guess too much female singers are often singing in a clear and angelic way, but Frightdoll (without using heavy distorted and/or other saturated effects) just make her voice sound more robotic. The best songs from this album (cf. “Alone In this”, “Caused”, “Indecision” and “Leaving You”) are definitely darker and would fit into dark electro playlists. The songs are hard and danceable while melodious as well. That’s maybe because of the feminine touch of the artist, but it creates a delicious and irresistible touch. The last 2 songs of the album (cf. “Endings” and “Sweet Serenity”) are quieter and more into some gothic moods. They’re not my favourite ones, but add some diversity to the production. A real noticeable evolution for Frightdoll!
