Jamie Blacker is back with his 3rd full length. After the astonishing �Devotion, Discipline And Desire� released on Hive Records in early 2007 and "How Pure Would Your Utopia Be" released last year on Hive Records as well I was really curious to hear how the sound of ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse) has evolved. I think it makes sense to qualify �The Sea & The Silence� as a refreshing industrial album. It�s not about pure industrial music neither cheap improvisation, but a well-crafted piece of hard-danceable industrial music. The second cut entitled �Absolute Fury (In Its Very Fabric)� clearly shows the sound of this English sonic terrorist. We here get a mix of furious rhythmic and trance-industrial vibes with some extra rough vocals on top. This track is a pure sensation and there�re a few more pieces like this on �The Sea & The Silence�. The next track up �It�s Hard To Sleep In Hell� moves a bit more into electronic fields, but remains hard and bombastic with pure industrial strength. The dark electronic side comes back on �The Sea & The Silence Pt 1: The Sea�. It sounds more in the vein from the debut album, but the �endzeit� power of this cut is really impressive. ESA is definitely not music for �sissies�. �The Sea & The Silence Pt 2: The Silence� sounds quite different and miles away from industrial and other dark electro terror. This cut is more into tribal and ambient atmospheres flavoured with Eastern sounds. It�s another approach in sound and influences, but definitely successful! I think Jamie Blacker is ready to compose great ambient music! �Dead Fucking Desire� brings us back to the real essence of the ESA-sound: harsh, merciless and noisy industrial. Male and female vocals are mixed together here. The female screams are a bit Ambassador 21-like. Another side of this album appears on the �Randomly Selected Drawbacks Of The Human Condition Pt 2�-cut. The industrial basis has been here recovered with some acoustic guitar parts and female vocals. ESA experiences with new and undone ideas and the less I can say is that it works. This new album is definitely more open-minded than �Devotion, Discipline And Desire� while delivering a few real and hard potential hits! A real cool piece of music!
