-Comment: “Electr-Ohm Compilation 2” is the second compilation to be released by Japanese label Electr-Ohm. The first, released in 2006, showcased 13 international artists whilst this compilation sees a group of Japanese artists contributing two or three tracks each to showcase the new Japanese electronic underground scene. As with the first compilation there are many new names here that will probably not be familiar to anyone but rest assured that Sunao Inami, the man behind the Electr-Ohm label and a contributor to both compilations, again introduces us to a range of quality new electronic music. Ordinateur offers three tracks of sharp power electronics that often feature a tranquil backdrop of drifting ambience. Symphonyspace heads into more experimental waters and offers two tracks that combine strange glitch enhanced sounds combined with bassy IDM breaks. Aklihiro Yokotani contributes three tracks of bassy tones and dark distorted glitch ambience, his last track – the creatively titled “Cyborg Ape Googled ‘Real Bananas’” – is a classic IDM track that eventually distorts into the aforementioned style. Kezzardrix, who also contributes three tracks, is again more experimental but with a definite IDM edge. His music is full of glitch defects, strange little electronic sounds and a touch of distortion backed with bassy looped rhythms. Sunao Inami himself contributes three tracks that fall somewhere between power noise, IDM and experimental electronics; full of irregular pounding rhythms enhanced with buzzing tones and electronic effects, the end result being a powerful hit of hard electronics. “Electr-Ohm Compilation 1” was a critically acclaimed collection of tracks from new and established artists and “Electr-Ohm Compilation 2” continues where that collection left off, this time bringing with it a selection of new Japanese artists to investigate and enjoy.
