“[ko-mor-bid]” is Justin Brink’s first album for Chicago based label Tympanik Audio as his alter ego Pneumatic Detach. With albums already released for labels such as Hive Records, Bugs Crawling Out of People and Frozen Empire Media along with numerous remix and compilation appearances, Brink’s latest release was the “The All Too Logical Descent Into Madness” collaboration album with spoken word artist It-Clings, who also appears on a track on “[ko-mor-bid]”. Starting things off gently with the IDM-esque beats of the title track, it isn’t long before the pace picks up and Brink unleashes some adrenaline fuelled industrial chaos. Brink’s particular brand of crushing industrial rhythms are undeniably addictive as they pound and reverberate around your head. While his music is generally hard and relentless, he also has an ear for an infectious rhythm that should be destroying industrial dancefloors everywhere by now. Behind this industrial music however, Brink hides a darker ambient element that is not immediately evident when the energy rush of rhythms take hold. Where it does come to the forefront – on “How You Forget”, “The Turning” or “Stoneface” for example – the drifting dark ambient undertones are as serene as they are disconcerting. These are only brief interludes in proceedings – and they still contain plenty of crushing mechanical beats - before the barrage of hi-powered rhythms return to continue their onslaught. Brink’s music is well suited to It-Cling’s crazed spoken word musings on “A Helpful Bit of Advice”, his music emphasizing the mood and feeling admirably. “[ko-mor-bid]”, although essentially working within a defined set of parameters, never seems to become repetitive or formulaic, always evolving and taking itself in different directions whilst maintaining the same addictive quality. Another well produced and conceived album from Brink and Tympanik Audio.
