Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar aka Caned & Able plus several guest musicians realized a very diversified and quite fascinating project resulting in the “Smoke”-album. Starting with the rather dubby-minded “Trav’lin’ light”, “Wide On The Sidewalk” goes on with a more psychedelic and ambient minded piece evoking some distant Eno-influences. It all sounds a bit like Caned & Able worked out everything running through their mind. Joining the 5th track entitled “Soul Clap” they here experience with hip hop while a few songs further “Phat Beats/Bulimic Beats” sounds more like a soundtrack cut and “White Space” even evokes some Massive Attack memories. This last song is a real cool one. “Smoke” sounds maybe closer to a compilation of very different bands than the album of one band, but you don’t hear me complain as far as the result is good. Well, Caned & Able here have released an enjoyable album, which can’t be ranged in any particular layer!
