Songs Of Lemuria is a project set up by Nik Page (Blind Passengers) and Michaela Laubach, a classical formed vocalist who played in numerous musicals. Two musicians on piano and cello compliment both singers. It all sounds like a minimal and neo-classical style, which is true. The main surprise of this album is that the songs are all cover versions of very famous bands like Nirvana, Tanzwut, Subway To Sally, The Doors, Blind Passengers, And One, A-Ha, Einstürzende Neubauten ao. The adaptations of the original songs in a neo-classical style with M. Laubach as main vocalist are simply exceptional, like discovering a kind of cabaret of neo-classical music. The main instrument is the piano reinforcing this cabaret feeling while the cello adds ere and than its typical sad and melancholic touch. Among the 14 songs I was especially impressed by “Dein Kuss” (cover of Nik Page) for the penetrating sad touch of the song, “Dein Duft” (cover of And One) for the explicit cabaret style and “All Apologies” (cover of Nirvana) for the surprising harpsichord touch. Covering all these songs is a real challenge, but when it’s done with such a taste for delicacy and brilliance, it can be only seen as a total success!
