Self-described as 'ritual-folk-music', Golgatha lead the listener down a crooked path to observe tribal drum circles, nocturnal landscapes, and occasional bursts of moody folk. Building from the echo of intermittent hand drums, the shaman-like "Rite of Spring (v.II)" summons whispering spirits as it slowly ascends to a clacking, steam engine rhythmic frenzy. Other moments, like the deep drones, frightened pianos, and blurred voices of "Birth=Rite", are reminiscent of the morbid moors of fellow CMI artist, Raison D'Etre. As for their folk elements, "Garden of Love (v.II)", with its dreamy lilting vocals, mesmerizing acoustic guitar jangle, and tambourine punctuation, is like a faded memory of sixties' era psychedelia. Though this piece seems oblivious and incongruous to its surroundings, a successful integration of their ritual and folk lives in "Lost Horizon" and "Flesh of the Orchid". With the former, pensive acoustic guitar spirals like opium smoke between gossamer siren ghosts, while the latter finds Christoph Donarski's crooning baritone between drum-punched martial choruses. Though their juxtaposition of folk and dark ambience is not entirely harmonious, Golgotha provide a pleasant diversion for anyone keen on martial folk or CMI’s evil ambience. (VM:6/7)Vlad M.
