U:B is the brainchild of a German artist known only as Chris who has already released two EPs, “Nano” and “Innocent Pt. II”, on Aentitainment. He now presents his own brand of electro-rock to the masses in the form of his debut album “Dirtward”. Loaded with aggression, Chris takes full-on rock chords, electronic elements and impassioned vocal delivery to form a new brand of electro-rock that is generally angry and aggressive but occasionally offers the odd respite in the form of a gentler interlude. Similarities with NIN are bound to be drawn at some point, but where Reznor is essentially based around electronics with some added guitar, Chris adopts a more balanced approach, sometimes focussing on the electronic side but generally more rock centered. He even plays Reznor at his own game on “Spare Time”, “Low” and “Kayal”. Where Chris really breaks any connection however is when he really lets loose with the full force of his venom on tracks like “This is My Platoon”, “Don’t You” or “The Hedonist”, all of which mercilessly confront you and scream in your face. He even successfully experiments with a spoken word/rap narrative with “Buddy” and “Affirmative / A Letter”. “Dirtward” is a diverse and varied album that is not afraid to push boundaries, experiment with new ideas and is very accomplished throughout. Ignore the NIN similarities; this album is strong enough to stand on its own merits. (PL:8/9)PL.
