From the pulsating futurepop foundation of "Melt”, to the smoky sitar languor and grinding staccato stomp of the soft-to-metallic "Salt of Stones", I:Scintilla’s “Optics” encompasses electro, darkwave, and even industrial rock within this diverse and thoroughly excellent debut. At its best moments, I:Scintilla prove masters of the back-and-forth, quiet-to-loud technique. "Havestar" deftly bundles their vocalist Brittany's foreboding croon and twittering insectile arpeggios with a crunchy chorus assault constructed of heavy guitar riffs, emphatic drumming, and sing-song malevolence. Erupting into a colossal wall of guitar, "Scin" initially seems like no more than metallic might, yet it dissipates into slithering bayou of nocturnal seduction and synths, before finally blurring this bisection into a tangle of fuzzy guitar and angled verbal dirge at its chorus. "Translate" impishly pretends to be leading into a gentle ballad; starting with its velvet-delicate intimacy, stutter-inflected guitar soon rears its head, lashing metallic meter into Brittany's vivid hymn to create a stunning power ballad. While many crossover bands carefully struggle for mass commercial appeal, I:Scintilla side-step that sort of blind placating to span genres with surprising levels of finesse. (VM:9)Vlad M.
