The Digital Intervention - Capture (CD The Parallel Series/0101)

Industrial Music CDs at Storming The Base

The main force behind this project is none other than Paul Kendall aka PK, notorious for switching the production knobs at Mute’s well Worldwide Studio for artists such as Depeche Mode, Diamanda Galas, Die Krupps, Erasure, Fortran 5, Bruce Gilbert, Inspiral Carpets, Laibach, Nitzer Ebb, Renegade Soundwave, Frank Tovey, Wire and so on. For The Digital Intervention he joined up with French performer Olivia Louvel. Whereas all the other related releases on The Parallel Series came through Mute, this one (and so will be the others) is released on the French label 0101. Kendall as such is not a songwriter, instead he prefers freaking out on sounds, just listen to “Treatment not cure” to understand what I mean, even sexually tainted sounds are included, but the ones you would have expected. “Room service” even gets the sound of a mobile interfering with a recording device or PC to start a beat, and it works very well. Through the sound collages comes Olivia Louvel carefully painting her chanson-like voice over the layers. That chanson element is omni present on the track “La Coco”, in fact a song that was written in the mid 30ies. The biggest surprise however on this release is the track “Coma idyllique” featuring additional production by Alan Wilder who resurrected from the Recoil wintersleep to help out his longtime companion in the quest for the better sound. The production is very recognizable for those who have been following Alan Wilder’s solo efforts through Recoil. I personally had the cd on random in order to discover by myself what song Wilder had worked on, I instantly recognized it. Again you feel that the duo Wilder/Kendall is more or less like Siamese twins who feel each other’s needs and desires. When you hear Paul kendall’s rhythm sound on “Swallow”, fat and oh so appealing, you just know that there is lots more those two have up their sleeves, let’s see what the future brings, we hope for the best. Only for this already, this release is a must have, a document. Contact: www.0101-music.com (BVI: 7/8)BVI
