This 80sObscurities was founded by DJ Rexx Arkana to showcase old, often unknown or forgotten acts and tracks from the decade when electronic music was truly the new wave. Rexx Arkana has been a club/radio DJ and promoter since the mid-80s and headlined festivals on several continents and currently holds a residency at DEFCON, NYC's current longest-running weekly scene party. He is also the founder and lyricist of Brudershaft and one half of harsh electro act FGFC820.
Midweek here on 80sObscurities and I’ve got another Italo disco track lined up for your listening pleasure. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft that served as the backbone of the “Jagdwaffe” in World War II. Far superior to its Royal Air Force counterpart, the Spitfire Mk V, the Fw 190 gave Germany clear air superiority in the first half of the war. In this reference, however, Fockewulf 190 is the synth-driven dance outfit piloted by the duo of Dario Dell'Aere and Victor Life (nee Vittorio Barozzi).
“Gitano” is the band’s first single and signature track, released on F1 Team Records in 1984. The song showcases the project’s stylistic blend of traditional Italo disco and dark wave, influences prominent on their sophomore single “Body Heat”, which would prove to be their last release of the decade. In 2009, the band resurfaced with the “Oh Oh Oh” 12”, probably best noted for containing a hotly-debated new version of today’s featured track. Then, in 2011, dark wave curators Vinyl On Demand Records (who attentive listeners will remember also re-issued former 80sObs interviewee Die Werkpiloten) pressed the “Microcosmos 82 – 86” compilation containing pretty much everything Dell’Aere and Life ever recorded.
Highly sought after despite, or perhaps because of, it’s obscurity.
