A-ha member finishes Gumball 3000 race in a... Lada!Posted on 27/05/13
Consternation during the annual British 3,000-mile (4,800 km) international road rally 'Gumball 3000' which ended on May 24th in Monaco. After some mechanical difficulties with their 'Black Beauty' Ferrari, the norwegian Skjerven Racing Team 43 consisting of Magne 'Mags' Furuholmen (A-ha) and Einar Skjerven purchased a Lada 1300 S in Warsaw, and completed the race in the Lada as you can see in the videostill above (shot in Krakow) where Furuholmen drives the car.
The 120 cars rally lasted 6 days and traveled through 13 countries. This year's edition was the 15th anniversary of the Gumball 3000. This year the race started in Copenhagen on May 19 and then went on to Stockholm, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Krakow, Vienna, Verona to finally end in Monaco on May 24.
The Gumball 3000 was founded in 1999 by Maximillion Cooper, it sees an annual entry of 120 cars, which are mostly exotic and powerful sports cars. However, more unusual entries (such as police cars and camper-vans) have been seen. The Rally is not a serious race in the traditional sense of rally races - there are no prizes for being fastest or official timekeeping of any sort. Organizers emphasize that it is a road trip adventure and not a race. In 2008, the rally included a unique stopover in Pyongyang, the project having been initiated by the North Korean ambassador to Britain. Permission was initially granted to drive from South Korea through the fortified border, though in the end the stopover was without the cars.
