80sObscurities presents: Cold Phoenix - 'The Greatness of Love'Posted on 30/04/13
This 80sObscurities was founded by DJ Rexx Arkana to showcase old, often unknown or forgotten acts and tracks from the decade when electronic music was truly the new wave. Rexx Arkana has been a club/radio DJ and promoter since the mid-80s and headlined festivals on several continents and currently holds a residency at DEFCON, NYC's current longest-running weekly scene party. He is also the founder and lyricist of Brudershaft and one half of harsh electro act FGFC820.
Today’s 80sObscurities selection is another ultimate underground act from Italy, Bologna’s Cold Phoenix. This dark wave, post punk group was founded by Alessandro Paltretti (guitar, vocals), Vittorio Barion (bass), Alessandro Ruggeri (drums) and Alberto Verri (keyboards). Rumored to still have been teenagers at the time, the members wrote and recorded their only release, the 12'' EP “Your Eyes Are My Eyes,” for Italian indie label Airplane in 1985.
The influences on this record are readily apparent: the four included tracks echo with allusions to Joy Division and The Cure. Yet what would be considered derivative by the band’s detractors is what makes this obscure artist so attractive to fans of that style; shimmering guitars punctuated by Barion’s basslines and Paltretti’s melancholic wails recall the middle period of mope rock so popular amongst the disaffected and depressed. Today’s track did not appear on the original pressing of the EP, but instead was included as a bonus on the more recent version re-issued by 103 Edizioni Musicali Records in 2009.
It’s clear to the ears here that Cold Phoenix could have been a contender, if only anyone ever knew they existed. Hoping to change that now, though it may be nearly thirty years too late.
