80sObscurities presents: Agentss - 'Cidade Industrial'Posted on 01/04/13
This 80sObscurities was founded by DJ Rexx Arkana to showcase old, often unknown or forgotten acts and tracks from the decade when electronic music was truly the new wave. Rexx Arkana has been a club/radio DJ and promoter since the mid-80s and headlined festivals on several continents and currently holds a residency at DEFCON, NYC's current longest-running weekly scene party. He is also the founder and lyricist of Brudershaft and one half of harsh electro act FGFC820.
If you spent any time on the website for Brazilian musician/multi-artist Kodiak Bachine, it would be easy to think that the whole entire thing was just one elaborate April Fool's joke to underground electronic culture. And yet, while it may make for a perfect selection for 80sObscurities on this day, KB was every bit the real deal in São Paulo in the early part of the decade. The artist started out in the underground act Agentss, alongside friends/band mates Miguel Barella and Eduardo Amarante, around 1980.
Taking inspiration from other pioneering electronic bands such as Kraftwerk, Devo, Gary Numan, et al, Bachine and Agentss would quickly develop a minimalist new wave sound that few others in Brazil were creating at the time. This led to cult status amongst the city's youth, who would cram into local bars and performance halls to see them perform live. While the group never produced a full length, they did release two exceptionally rare 7" singles: 1982's "Agentss" and 1983's "Professor Digital."
When Agentss split in the middle of the decade, Bachine went on to write and perform as a solo artist, sadly little of this material was ever recorded. There does remain for posterity, however, the interesting art film "Eletricidade" from 1983, scored by him. This short film and a handful of fan vids for Agentss track are all that remain of this enigmatic, unknown artist.
Enjoy this slice of 80s obscurity and I'll be back again tomorrow with more.
