80sObscurities presents: Aimless Device - 'No Friend of Mine'Posted on 23/01/13
This 80sObscurities was founded by DJ Rexx Arkana to showcase old, often unknown or forgotten acts and tracks from the decade when electronic music was truly the new wave. Rexx Arkana has been a club/radio DJ and promoter since the mid-80s and headlined festivals on several continents and currently holds a residency at DEFCON, NYC's current longest-running weekly scene party. He is also the founder and lyricist of Brudershaft and one half of harsh electro act FGFC820.
Mid-week here on 80sObscurities and today's treat goes out to Atlanta's Anthony Lamont, whose record collection according to legend actually rivals my own. Our shared musical moment is Belgium's obscure Aimless Device. Active between 1985 and 1989, with obvious allusions to Psychedelic Furs and Gene Loves Jezebel, the band was founded by Bart Azijn, Patric M and Edgar on synths.
Originally part of what was known as the "Leuven scene", most notable for former 80sObs featured act The Neon Judgement, Aimless Device expanded synth/drum machine sound as they evolved over the years. It was in 1985 that they released their debut EP, "Hard To Be Nice", from which today's track is taken. A few singles followed ("World Of Coats" - 1986; "Dog Days" - 1987), and the band embarked on small tours through Spain, Germany and the surrounding areas. In 1988, bassist Ferre Baelen joined the band for the recording of "Mud In Your Eye" EP. While the record was well-received, the demise of their label Anything But Records caused the band to pack it in.
Rarely heard and long forgotten, here's Aimless Device with "No Friend of Mine."
