80sObscurities presents: Falco - 'Jeanny'Posted on 18/12/12
This 80sObscurities was founded by DJ Rexx Arkana to showcase old, often unknown or forgotten acts and tracks from the decade when electronic music was truly the new wave. Rexx Arkana has been a club/radio DJ and promoter since the mid-80s and headlined festivals on several continents and currently holds a residency at DEFCON, NYC's current longest-running weekly scene party. He is also the founder and lyricist of Brudershaft and one half of harsh electro act FGFC820.
On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: L'ame Immortelle/Nachtmahr mastermind Thomas Rainer. And Thomas Rainer gave us FALCO: "Back in 1986 when this was released, the video and song itself were so controversial that it was banned from TV and radio stations in Europe as several feminist groups "demanded better" and accused the song of endorsing child murder. This can be called ridiculous today, but back then the video was a big deal.
Musically it was also quite a stretch in the music scene as all verses only feature spoken vocals. The chorus nevertheless is epic (literally, and not in the overused sense, where even the taste of a McDonald's Hamburger Royal is called epic). I remember not being able to get the song out of my head for days, even though I was still a small boy back then. I rediscovered it in my early teens when my interest in music flourished and it's still resounding in my head when I walk through the subway station in Vienna where the video was shot."
RIP Johann Hölzel, aka Falco, and thank you for the music.
