Curiosity landed safely on Mars - 1st picture now available !

This must be the most exciting industrial news in years. NASA's Curiosity rover has landed on Mars at 10:31 PM US time (7:31 AM for the Europeans) and sent it's very first picture! Its descent-stage retrorockets fired, guiding it to the surface. Nylon cords lowered the rover to the ground in the "sky crane" maneuver. When the spacecraft sensed touchdown, the connecting cords were severed, and the descent stage flew out of the way.

You could follow the event live via the net, but NASA and their media partner CNN clearly underestimated the attention for this huge step in Mars discovery as all streaming websites went down in the blink of an eye.
