The Belgian label Alfa Matrix and especially its band Zombie Girl are caught in the middle of an international media storm following an article in the UK newspaper The Daily Mail which links Zombie Girl and especially its "Blood Brains & Rock 'N' Roll" album to the tragic death of 15-year old Carly Ryan, brutally murdered in 2007. The article in the UK newspaper The Daily Mail was published on Monday, October 19th 2009 and reads:
- "To this day, the website features young women in provocative poses, amid photos that display items such as a black 'sexy psycho dress' and a 'sleeveless bondage dress', along with a music album called Zombie Girl - Blood Brains & Rock 'N' Roll."
Both Zombie Girl members Renee Cooper and Sebastian R. Komor were shocked to learn that their band and material had been used in the article in reference of "young women in provocative poses" on social websites. Carly Ryan was murdered by a (fictitious) teenager called Brandon - actually a father and his son who are now accused of murdering the 15-year old girl.

In the statement issued early yesterday afternoon to media, Alfa Matrix and the band stress that they do not promote this kind of (online) behaviour nor does the band or the label promote violence via the music in any way. "The Canadian based electro dance act Zombie Girl can in no way be held responsible for other people's actions", so the label says. In a first reaction the musical brain behind Zombie Girl, Sebastian R. Komor, says:
- "I want to send my regards to the family and friends of Carly Ryan. May she be in a place where she found peace. I strongly dislike having my music brought up in something as horrible as murder, and I have never promoted violence of any kind, whether to humans or animals. Zombie Girl is fictional and just a fun project dealing with the topics of the living dead and all that. To have my music mentioned in a case like this really bothers me. Music is the only thing in the world still making people happy, get together and dance. Rest in peace Carly Ryan, I'm so sorry someone did this to you."
The band's front woman Renee Cooper adds:
- "The music and image that I portray on stage is an act. It is not who I am. This is not what the music is about. I am shocked, horrified and saddened that a young girl and a fan of Zombie Girl was murdered. My heart goes out to her family and friends. This is a terrible thing. I am just in shock right now."
Alfa Matrix and Zombie Girl end the statement saying that they wish to express their sincere condolences to the family of Carly Ryan. The label also confirmed having requested a correction to be published in the newspaper.
It's very clear that the team behind Alfa Matrix are far from pleased with the very negative publicity the news article has generated. Bernard Van Isacker, spokesman for the label:
- "We're actually pretty furious, yes. It's already damn difficult to get indie electro music featured in regular press and when we get some attention it's always in dodgy cases like this where they mix everything and everyone leaving a very bitter aftertaste for all concerned parties. My thoughts go out to Carly, who died in vain for the pleasure of two nutcases."
Van Isacker also expresses serious doubts as far as the journalistic qualities of the article:
- "The paragraph we refer to reads as if - or at least suggests - that she was partially responsible for what happened due to how she dressed or looked. Simply repugnant! Whatever picture or message she posted on her profile, this is no excuse for what happened. That her looks are being used in order to 'ornament' that so-called news article is beyond anything. You need to have a sick mind to even consider this."
Remarkable, the label's press text specifically requests media not to link the statement to any current commercial release of the band in order to respect the victim and her family. Van Isacker:
- "Zombie Girl have nothing to do with her tragic death nor does the band want to be associated with the reasons for her being killed, certainly not in a commercial way. I doubt though that The Daily Mail will have the honesty to post a correction."
Special notice: the Side-Line staff wants to stress that the commercial links on top and below the article are databased generated and in no way placed there to profit from this specific article. Thanks for your understanding.
