Pantera guitarist shot dead during Ohio show

Dimebag Darrell, 38 and guitarist for Damageplan and Pantera, was killed during a shooting at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub Wednesday night. Apart from Darrell, real name Darrell Abbott, 4 other people were killed while 2 others were seriously injured. Damageplan had just begun their first song when 25-year-old Nathan Gale jumped onstage, made a comment about Pantera, and began firing at close range into Darrell's body, shooting him several times before opening fire on the crowd. The gunman was killed soon after by a police officer who was in the vicinity when he heard the first deadly shots. Darrell was pronounced dead at the scene. Damageplan have been together for more than a year and their debut album "New found power" reached the US top 40. The album featured appearances by Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor and Ozzy Osbourne's bandmate Zakk Wylde. They also collaborated with ex-Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell for a song on the soundtrack of "The Punisher". Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott set up the band after Pantera's split, which saw the brothers break from singer Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown.
