Side-Line has learned that the UK based cult label World Serpent is to stop all activities. Although the news has not been 'officially' announced by World Serpent word is getting around very fast. Side-Line contacted the label two days ago for comments but no reply came. World Serpent Distribution was formed in the late 80s and was co-owned by David Gibson, Alan Trench and Alison Webster. It began operation by distributing Current 93, Death In June, Nurse With Wound and Sol Invictus. The music press once described Sol as drinking from the same poisoned chalice as C93 and DIJ, and at one time World Serpent was more or less synonymous with this 'apocalyptic folk' genre. Although there are now many more artists, labels and distributors in this field, World Serpent remained for years its pivotal focus. But all this will now come to an end. An artist we contacted regarding the end of the label says: "Events took a major turn last week when we were told that World Serpent would cease trading." The label will remain active until all accountancy is cleared and pending invoices have been paid to and from the label. It is to be believed that the most renown acts will soon find a new label/distributor, but for some of the smaller/lesser known World Serpent artists it may well be the end of their career. In the upcoming days we will already announce the new distributors for bands such as Chris & Cosey and related.

more distro's going under as well as labels..
its too bad but when everyone thinks mp3s are the way to go...record companies and distributors lose out.
the only ones who benefit are apple/macintosh, and the other corporate suits pushing mp3's on the world.
they pulled the wool over the eyes of the weak.

all pigs must die......thank GOD.wsd is to end having lost three of its major artists a few years ago-DEATH IN JUNE-BOYD RICE+DER BLUTHARSCH.the company as relied on re-issues repackaged for a while now and there is only so many times you can buy a cd no matter how much you love that band.
in reply to SAGI'S comment about DIJ losing money..it was Douglas who won the legal battle against them...
I HOPE SOL INVICTUS FIND SOMEONE BETTER...
take care all.mark f

I so diagree with you sagi Death In June and C93 and Sol Invitus and other apocalyptic folk have far exceeding talent the some bands can imagine to have. But to each there own.I am rather sadened about this as i am a huge DIJ,C93,Sol,Coil fan.I will miss this record label and i hope the best for said bands futures and i hope some of them do not fall.I also hope everything gets sorted out.

I dont remember too many artists directly on the WS imprint besides the "popular" ones mentioned. I only have two releases by The Checkists on WS and they went defunct long ago. This reminds me of the day I found out Celtic Circle/Khazud-Dum went under, although this situation is not as intense for me. I hope that everything gets sorted out and everyone gets what is owed to them.
