Giving away music for free actually has its price. Tickets for the band's UK tour are now priced around £42.50 (€63,75 /US$91), too expensive say critics and fans. Not expensive at all says one of the band's manager, Bryce Edge, who further added that "We don’t want to go on tour and lose money". In the same interview with The Times Edge also said that "It is expensive to put on the quality show people expect, it is a comparable price to artists of a similar stature." But that last comment was one too many for lots of fans. One fan said this: "Radiohead's live shows have almost no visual extra's to offer if no to say none at all which turns Edge's comment into a lame excuse to get even more greedy."
In the meantime EMI and Radiohead are accusing each other of telling lies after it was revealed in The Times that Radiohead wanted £10m (€15m/US$21,5) from their original record label EMI (Parlophone) in order to re-sign. EMI offered £3m which Radiohead found unacceptable as they already had a global marketing budget of £3m in mind. EMI answered by saying that Radiohead were demanding an extraordinary amount of money and that the other artists on the label should not have to subsidise their gains.
In a reaction to the mentioned amounts of money in The Times, Thom Yorke posted on the Radiohead newsblog that they did not ask for "a load of cash" to re-sign. Yorke: "That is a lie. The Times in the UK should check its facts before it prints such dirt. What we wanted was some control over our work and how it was used in the future by them." Yorke adds also that they took no big advances from both independent labels XL and TBD for their new record. No comments though on the high priced tickets.

Posted by: ferrariguru on Feb 03, 08 | 9:59 pm Radiohead are the best band on the planet, bar none. People paid up to $77,000 to see this year's superbowl, and face value for those tickets was $700/$900 respectively. $91 is a deal, and anything under $200 US per ticket is what I'll pay to take my friends. Radiohead may never tour again. |
Posted by: sowhat on Jan 06, 08 | 12:35 pm we just paid $250 a ticket to see the pumpkins...you can't put a price on something that you'll remember forever. What would you do with the money instead? Go to the corner bar buy chicks drinks all night hoping to get laid? |
Posted by: sylver on Jan 01, 08 | 4:54 pm Nevermind that, have you heard IN RAINBOWS? After this bland dadrock I wouldn't pay 50p let alone 20sovs to see the 'head. |
Posted by: fishtalejava on Jan 01, 08 | 1:59 pm i should refrain from speaking as i feel many radiohead supporters have already done so, but in the haste of this horrible article i cannot. First, hungary lucy mentioned that radiohead made more money from this online venture than all other albums combined... might i suggest you actually read the article you so confidently quoted. Thom said that they made more from this online venture than they have made from any online sales, ever! Secondly, what is the point of critics? If that was my job I would have to kill myself. Finally, if you don’t want to pay the 91$ to go see radiohead, then don’t. I’m quite sure all these people who are complaining on here are the ones who think music is free. |
Posted by: IH8ToRegister on Jan 01, 08 | 11:22 am Bernard, I've never heard that statement before, and I don't quite understand it. Please try another |
Posted by: yluko on Jan 01, 08 | 11:18 am Thats just your opinion on the worth of a show. I am sure many others don't mind paying 40$ to see a Garth brooks or Madonna show which cost a bit more to put on then say fugazi. |
Posted by: whormongr on Jan 01, 08 | 3:40 am if a show is over 20 bucks, unless it is a festival it usually isn't worth seeing- I remember back in '91 when when fugazi had a $6 cap on their ticket prices and a promoter tried to sell the tickets for $10 and they pulled out.... I prefer that ethic myself |
Posted by: yluko on Dec 31, 07 | 7:28 pm I think an artist can set whatever price they want for a ticket if people are willing to pay kudo's to them. We live in a capitalist society sell it for whatever you want and maybe ill go maybe I won't but I shouldn't have the right to a fair priced ticket to see a band. |
Posted by: Side-Line on Dec 31, 07 | 6:11 pm @ IH8ToRegister : what you are doing is seeking nails on low water in dutch... |
Posted by: IH8ToRegister on Dec 31, 07 | 3:12 pm This is the going rate for pop bands. |
Posted by: Delameko Stone on Dec 31, 07 | 1:07 pm My parents paid £150 each to see Madonna, £42.50 doesn't seem so bad in contrast. Of course, I wouldn't pay £42.50 to see any band, I'd rather just listen to the album than pay that. |
Posted by: Hungry Lucy on Dec 31, 07 | 10:25 am It's worth noting that Radiohead (as a band) made more money from the latest "free" release than all of their other albums combined: |
Posted by: galvaoRod on Dec 31, 07 | 7:57 am i think labels and bands alike are testing the market to see who can find first the new paradigm for the record industry, if the tour is a success we´ll see a lot of guys jumping in the bandwagon for sure |
Posted by: sylver on Dec 31, 07 | 6:08 am Yet again Radiohead get caught up in their own image rather than concentrate on what is most important; the music. Ever since KID A there has been this need to replace the tunes with this 'WE THINK WE ARE DIFFERENT' attitude that sadly the music far from backs up. Bands like CAN, FAUST did that far better only had the musical basis to back it up, Radiohead always were and always will be nothing more than an alternative rock band. They should concentrate on this rather than ripping off their fans by pretending they are something else via pointless web grabbing news articles and overpriced ticket prices. |
Posted by: raedarius on Dec 31, 07 | 5:56 am Well, Covenant supported by Client cost £17 in London recently... |
Posted by: iSeb on Dec 31, 07 | 2:32 am Lol. No comment! [not talking about the ticketprice]. |
Posted by: Krush You on Dec 31, 07 | 12:50 am $91 dollars to see Radiohead? Do you get a free cd, t-shirt and a blowjob? Do they think they are the Eagles or the Rolling Stones? Labels are greedy blah blah blah at least they kept their ticket prices reasonable... |
