In the early 80's Goth Rock was still beginning to take root in the US. Some of the most notable purveyors of this form of music included Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Mission and Fields of the Nephilim. While many bands in the genre faded into obscurity, some remained an influential force. The UK band Specimen was one such act. By fusing punk and new wave fashion with Goth Rock music, they created one of the first hybrids in the genre: Glam Goth. Their biggest hit was the song "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" which was played relentlessly in clubs throughout the UK and US. The band formed in Bristol, England during 1980. Unusual for a keyboardist, Jonny Slut became the face of the band and its most famous member, due largely to his striking image and fashion sense. While the band were together, they never released a full album, only singles and an E.P. (Though in 1997 two full-length compilations, "Warm Wet Cling - Film Red Velvet Crush" and "Azoic", would be released featuring various Specimen songs.) The band disbanded in 1985. After the band went its separate ways, guitarist Jon Klein worked with Siouxsie & the Banshees for a period of 7 years, before working with Sinéad O'Connor. Johnny Slut formed Diskord Datkord with Mark Tinley and Adam Tinley before going on to work with The KLF, Adamski and Atomizer. He also founded the Nag Nag Nag club in London, where he is one of the house DJs. In early 2007, members of Specimen re-united and began working on a new album for Metropolis Records. The result, "Electric Ballroom", will be released on Metropolis and available from June 19th, 2007 on. The current line-up consists of:
- T.bias - Vocals, additional guitar, & keyboards
- Jon Klein - Guitar, vocals
- Stephan X - Guitar
- Kimba - Bass
- Tim Huthert - Drums
The album will also feature collaborations with original Specimen members, Olli Wisdom and Jonny Slut.
